IVAN'S PUNCH: GIUKHG01

Scenario edited by: Hector Gomez HARPBBS# 879

Background: Winter 1994, Task Force 60 (a large US CVBG formation)
has been assigned on routine exercises on the GIUK gap.
Along with the main group, two Los-Angeles class SSNs
were strategically stationed to provide coverage while
the maneuvers are being executed. At 22:00:00 GMT,
SOSUS seabed sonars detected submarine movement.
After subsequent attempts by NATO to identify the
intruder, orders were given to Task Force 60 to extract
the sub while maintaining alert status. Three hours
later, news of a SOVIET nuclear first strike consisting
of IRBMs were staged along the western part of Europe.
Long-range bomber groups were scanned by NORAD and
identified to be hostile supersonic types. A presidential
directive was initiated at 3:00:00 GMT to start defensive
operations to protect US interests in Europe. Consequently,
SACEUR with consultation from NATO chiefs has declared
retaliation in accordance with the US president's executive
order. After final approval by the NATO governments, the
allied forces were mobilized for a full-scale confrontation.

Situation: Task force 60 received the orders to initiate a defensive
posture on the GIUK gap and prevent the Soviet Northern
Fleet from "breaking out" into the Atlantic. At the same
instant, ultra-low frequencies were transmitted by the
"Looking Glass" to the SSNs to coordinate their sweeps
along with Task force 60's orders. Subsequent communications
between the CVBG and the SSNs to verify alert code checklists.
After analyzing the tactical condition, the two groups main-
tained radio silence in anticipation of a strong Soviet
            "storm".

Intelligence:
            NONE.

Blue Orders:
PREVENT THE RED FLEET FROM CROSSING THE GIUK GAP! Do not
initiate a nuclear strike unless RED side executes nuke
ordinance on a NATO target. Consult victory conditions
            below for specifics.

Playing Variations:
There are enough variable conditions in this setup to
accommodate a multi-start as well as multi-path mix.

Scenario Requirements:
When playing this scenario I recommend the following:
            1. Set game parameters to "IGNORE ships running aground".
            2. Disable all memory resident programs since this scenario
               requires 578k memory.

Finally:
Please feel free to send me your feedback on this scenario.
Your comments will be highly appreciated. I welcome
corrections on any deficiencies you might encounter.
